Major Changes Included in Enterprise SLES 16.0

  • changing “Service Packs” (SPs) to “Minor Releases”

  • Agama

    • SLES 16 introduces Agama as the new system installer, replacing the YaST installer
  • Cockpit

    • For 1:1 remote management, SLES 16 transitions from YaST2 to Cockpit
  • Security Enhancements

    • SELinux is enabled by default as the primary Linux Security Module.
    • AppArmor remains optional but is no longer the default.
  • Networking Changes

    • NetworkManager is the unified default networking backend.
    • Wicked is deprecated distribution-wide.
  • Configuration Layout Modernization

    • Adopted the /usr/etc model:
      • Vendor defaults → /usr/etc
      • Administrator overrides → /etc

    This avoids .rpmnew/ .rpmsave conflicts and supports modern update models.
